Local high school students to become “Senators” at PSU Berks

READING – Senator David G. Argall (R-Schuylkill/Berks) will host his third annual student government seminar with local area school districts on Thursday, October 6 at Penn State University, Berks Campus.

The “Senator for a Day” event gives students real experience on how the state legislative process works in Harrisburg.

“This event provides students with an opportunity to see how government functions and how it reacts to public policy issues,” Argall said. “The student government seminar is a lot of fun and more importantly, very educational.”

Starting at 8:30 a.m., students will be sworn-in with Senator Argall making brief remarks on the legislative process. From 9:00 – 11:00 a.m., students will participate in mock committees where they will debate two bills in each committee.

At 11:40 a.m., students will convene for the General Session to debate and vote on proposals that passed in the respective committees.

“The seminar brings the textbook to life,” Argall said. “The issues the students get to debate and vote on are very similar to proposals under review in the state Capitol.”

The event will take place at the Perkins Student Center, with committee meetings occurring in adjacent classrooms.

Participating schools include Berks Catholic, Hamburg Area, Fleetwood Area, Schuylkill Valley and Tulpehocken Area.
