Twardzik, Argall Announce $1 Million for Pottsville Downtown Improvements

HARRISBURG — The City of Pottsville was recently awarded $1 million from the Multimodal Transportation Fund to enhance sidewalks and streets, according to Rep. Tim Twardzik (R-123) and Sen. Dave Argall (R-29).

The funding will support a streetscape improvement project aimed at revitalizing the pedestrian corridor connecting the iconic Yuengling Brewery to downtown Pottsville businesses, helping to boost its economic impact across the city. Yuengling Brewery attracts more than 70,000 visitors annually.

Planned improvements include the construction of new sidewalks and the modernization of three traffic signals on Centre Street, each more than 20 years old, to improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow.

“On behalf of Pottsville, I want to sincerely thank Sen. Argall and Rep. Twardzik for their leadership in securing this $1 million state grant to revitalize our downtown,” said Mayor Tom Smith. “This funding reflects a true partnership between our city and our legislators, working hand-in-hand to breathe new life into our downtown, enhance public spaces, strengthen our local economy and support the small businesses that make our community thrive. Together, we’re building a downtown that honors Pottsville’s history while creating a vibrant future for residents and visitors alike.”

“Pottsville has so much to offer, and this $1 million investment will help ensure that residents and visitors can safely enjoy all that downtown has to offer,” Twardzik said. “From modern sidewalks to updated traffic signals, these improvements will enhance public safety, support local businesses and strengthen the heart of our city for years to come. I want to thank Sen. Argall for his partnership in making this funding a reality.”

“Rep. Twardzik and I enjoyed working with Pottsville’s past mayors and councils, and we really appreciate the new mayor and council’s enthusiastic start in attacking blight and revitalization efforts in the downtown and across the city’s many neighborhoods, including the new Rosalia Hotel, the Yuengling Brewery, many small businesses and market-rate apartments downtown,” said Argall. “This highly sought-after funding is a major win in our efforts to breathe new life into the City of Pottsville.”

The Multimodal Transportation Fund was created by the General Assembly to provide funding that encourages economic development and a safe, reliable system of transportation to Pennsylvania residents. Funding was approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority, an independent agency of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development which administers many of Pennsylvania’s economic development and community improvement programs.
