HARRISBURG — State grants totaling more than $1.3 million were awarded to communities in Schuylkill County today. Sen. Dave Argall (R-29) and Rep. Tim Twardzik (R-123) worked with local leaders to secure this highly competitive funding.
“Towns and neighborhoods in all corners of Schuylkill County will benefit from this funding,” said Argall.
“These grants are a direct investment in the safety, vitality and future of our communities,” said Twardzik. “From police equipment to trail development, each project reflects our commitment to improving quality of life across Schuylkill County.”
The following projects received funding:
Gordon Borough was awarded $39,915 to install new flooring in the Gordon Community Building.
The Highridge Improvement District Authority was awarded $100,000 to purchase and install new streetlights in the Highridge Business Park in Cass Township.
Norwegian Township was awarded $100,000 to purchase a garbage truck.
Port Carbon Borough was awarded $680,000 to convert a former church into a new municipal building and police station.
Schuylkill County, on behalf of the Schuylkill River Greenway Association, was awarded $300,000 to construct the Mill Creek and Coal Creek sections of the Schuylkill River Trail in New Castle Township, Blythe Township and Saint Clair Borough.
West Mahanoy Township was awarded $95,000 to purchase police equipment.
This funding was awarded through the Statewide Local Share Account program, which distributes gaming revenue to economic development projects.
The funding was approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority, an independent agency of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development which administers many of Pennsylvania’s economic development and community improvement programs.
