HARRISBURG – The June edition of the local TV program hosted by Sen. Dave Argall (R-29) examines strategies to repair or demolish blighted buildings in communities large and small across Pennsylvania.
“In several of my recent town hall meetings in Sheppton, Lansford, and Frackville, local people have often commented that blighted, decaying, rat-infested buildings can spread through a community like the plague, but community revitalization efforts are also contagious,” said Argall. “I’ve seen it in Jim Thorpe, Tamaqua, Shenandoah, Orwigsburg, Hazleton, Pottsville, and beyond. The repair or demolition of vacant eyesores provides much-needed new housing and encourages new and existing employers to expand in surrounding buildings.”
The program features a public hearing of the Senate Majority Policy Committee requested by Sen. Lynda Culver (R-27) and chaired by Argall in Sunbury. Local elected officials, business leaders, housing authorities, housing advocates and local city and borough managers discussed successful efforts to restore derelict properties and ongoing challenges to these efforts, including navigating code enforcement laws and securing adequate funding for demolition.
