HARRISBURG – The Senate State Government Committee will hold a joint hearing with the House State Government Committee on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on how the anticipated delays in the 2020 Census could impact Pennsylvania’s redistricting and reapportionment process. This hearing comes after the Census Bureau announced that the data necessary for redrawing congressional and legislative districts will be delayed until the end of September.
Senator David G. Argall (R-Berks/Schuylkill), the chair of the Senate State Government Committee, stated that this hearing became much more important when the Census Bureau announced the lengthy delay. “Redistricting will be one the most important challenges the legislature tackles in 2021. Holding this hearing will help us to understand what additional burdens the census delay will place on the redistricting process,” said Argall.
“The delaying in conducting the census, the basis of which ensures Pennsylvanians receive equal representation at the federal and state levels, could lead to ramifications in congressional reapportionment and legislative redistricting,” said House State Government Committee Chairman Seth Grove (R-Dover). “The hearing will allow representatives and senators to receive input from top officials as we prepare for any possible delays.”
