Argall to host student government seminar at Penn State Schuylkill Campus on May 12

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN – Senator David G. Argall (R-Schuylkill/Berks) will host his annual “Senator for a Day” student government seminar on May 12 at the Penn State University Schuylkill Campus from 8 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

Argall said that the event helps students better understand the legislative process and think critically about some of the real-life issues facing lawmakers.

“The proposals considered by students often mirror the issues considered by the General Assembly, including measures to eliminate the property tax, require drug testing for welfare beneficiaries and privatize the sale of wine and liquor,” Argall said. “Students often offer very interesting and thoughtful perspectives on these topics, and I look forward to another energetic conversation about the issues.”

Students are assigned to one of four committees – Education, Finance, State Government or Transportation – to consider two mock Senate proposals. The students are provided news articles in advance of the seminar to become familiar with the issues.

Once the mock committee meetings are adjourned, the four groups come together in a general session to debate proposals that were approved in committee. Details for the event can be found here.

Photos, video and other highlights of the student government seminar will be available on Argall’s website at www.senatorargall.com in the days following the event.
