Senate passes measure to review tax dollar waste for unused property and office space

HARRISBURG – The Senate approved a measure Monday night to seek out cost savings and efficiencies with the current use state-owned and state-leased properties, according to one of the resolution’s sponsors, Senator David G. Argall (R-Schuylkill/Berks).

Senate Resolution 215 requires the Joint State Government Commission to review the utilization and procurement of state owned and leased office space, storage facilities, garages, and other property. The study will also compare private leasing, acquisition and management of property to state policies in order to identify possible savings to taxpayers.

Argall introduced the resolution after learning of several vacant and underutilized properties owned and leased by the state.

“The decline in the number of state employees over the last three decades necessitates a strong approach to managing state government property and office space,” Argall said. “This resolution will provide us with a road map to make the most efficient use of real estate and office space and save valuable tax dollars.”
