Happy 90th Birthday, Betty!

In this job, I’m often invited to celebrate special events for local organizations and individuals, but this week’s event was EXTRA special for my family, celebrating the 90th birthday of Elizabeth Billig Koch, my wife Beth’s mother. To make it even more special, Betty was able to celebrate for the first time with her month-old great-granddaughter, Amelia Zhang Argall, along with Amelia’s very proud parents, my son AJ and his wife Frances!

Senator for a Day Student Seminar in Carbon County

Over 50 high school students from Carbon, Schuylkill and Luzerne Counties learned what it’s like to be a state senator or representative at my latest Senator for a Day seminar, with students from Palmerton Area, Lehighton Area, and Marian Catholic High Schools.

The students had the chance to debate voter ID, drug tests for welfare recipients, limits on high school sports and more, learning about the realities of legislative policy—the good, the bad, and the truly ugly.

Rep. Doyle Heffley and I were very impressed with their knowledge of current issues and their ability to carefully debate some of the most complex topics before us in Harrisburg.

To everyone who helped make the event happen, especially our hosts at Carbon Career and Technical Institute: thank you!

We will conduct a similar program on November 21 at Penn State’s Schuylkill Campus—If you’re interested in learning more, please contact any of my local offices.

How to Prepare for the Nov. 7 Election

Election Day on Nov. 7 is approaching. You’re able to participate as long as you’re registered to vote by Oct. 23. If you’ve moved, this is also a great time to double check that you’re registered to vote at your current address.

Anyone who wishes to vote by mail must apply by Oct. 31. You must be a registered voter to submit an application, which can be done here.

If you are looking for a way to help your community, learn more about becoming a poll worker here. Thousands of Pennsylvanians are needed to run elections, and poll workers are needed in all 67 counties.

Finnegan Foundation Offers State Government Internships

College students interested in state government can now apply for summer internships in Harrisburg through the James A. Finnegan Fellowship Foundation.

This is a great opportunity for Pennsylvania’s future leaders. The Finnegan Foundation allows college students from across Pennsylvania who are interested in politics and government to take their experience to the next level. I was a Finnegan intern during my college career – it was a very valuable experience.

Internships are awarded through an essay contest. Applicants must write between 1,500 and 2,500 words about their opinions of the Pennsylvania Award for Student Success (PASS) Program, which would offer students in struggling schools grants to explore other educational opportunities.

Schuylkill County Legislative Delegation Meets with Local Businesses

Yesterday, I joined Rep. Jamie Barton, Rep. Dane Watro, Rep. Tim Twardzik, and Rep. JoAnne Stehr at a roundtable discussion with the Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce about the most important issues now facing the Senate and the House. My main point: Luzerne, Carbon, and Schuylkill Counties now offer main more job opportunities, with a much-improved highway system and many more opportunities for higher education than in past decades, BUT MANY CHALLENGES have yet to be resolved!

Celebrating 100 Years of the Tuscarora Fire Company

The Tuscarora Fire Company recently invited Rep. Jamie Barton and me to join their 100th anniversary celebration. To everyone who has volunteered over the years and put their safety on the line to keep the community safe – thank you for your service!

Recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Every October, we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, but early detection can drastically increase the survival rate. Take action by scheduling regular clinical breast exams and mammograms.

We passed comprehensive breast cancer screening legislation earlier this year that eliminated out-of-pocket costs for necessary BRCA testing and screening for high-risk Pennsylvanians.

We also supported a resolution highlighting metastatic breast cancer – stage four when cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Despite advancements in medical science, metastatic breast cancer remains incurable.

Stocking PA’s Waters with Trout

Pennsylvania’s waterways are being restocked with approximately 117,500 hatchery-raised adult Rainbow, Brown and Brook Trout in 119 stream sections and lakes. The effort will continue through mid-December.

The stockings will replenish popular fishing spots across the state and provide ice fishing opportunities. Review the trout stocking schedules here. They are subject to change because of water temperature fluctuations and hatchery logistics.

Trout that are stocked during fall and winter can be fished for immediately. Anglers ages 16 and older must have a valid Pennsylvania fishing license and trout permit. You can buy 2023 fishing licenses and permits online or at a retail license issuing agent.
