How Can I Improve This E-Newsletter?

One of my goals as your state senator is to provide useful information about local events and state government. Please take this short survey to share your thoughts about how to make my e-newsletter as beneficial as possible to YOU.

Free License Plate Replacement Check in Freeland

Is your license plate worn out? You can get it replaced for free at an event I’m hosting with Rep. Mike Cabell on November 9th. A local police officer will be on hand to inspect your plate to determine if it’s illegible.

For more information or to RSVP, call 877-327-4255.

Argall Report: Celebrating 20 Years of LCCC Morgan Center

The November edition of my local TV program highlights the recent celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) Morgan Center.

It all began when hundreds of local residents gathered with me at a local fire hall to discuss the future of this region. One of the top items on our wish list was better access to higher education.

Thanks to a true partnership between the Morgan Foundation, LCCC, the Tamaqua Area School District, and state government, we were able to turn an abandoned junior high school into a college campus, right in the heart of Tamaqua. Watch the full report to learn how we did it and how many lives have been changed for the better since that historic day.

RGGI Carbon Tax Stuck Down in Court

Since Governor Wolf first attempted to unilaterally impose a tax on carbon by joining RGGI in 2019, I have said many times that no Governor, Republican or Democrat, can be allowed to create any new taxes without the support of the General Assembly. This week, the Commonwealth Court agreed.

Study after study has shown that RGGI would lead to huge increases in energy prices and kill thousands of family sustaining jobs across Pennsylvania.

I hope that Governor Shapiro will do what his predecessor did not: work on a bipartisan basis to find a better path forward.

Carbon County: Educating Seniors on Scams and Meeting with Faith Leaders

Today, Rep. Doyle Heffley and I hosted two well-attended seminars in Nesquehoning and Lansford where seniors could learn how to avoid the latest scams. Special thanks to David Shallcross, the Director of Senior Protection at the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General, for his informative presentation!

We also hosted a breakfast in Lehighton with over 20 faith leaders from Carbon County to hear about issues they would like to see resolved. Thank you to everyone who took the time to join us for a very productive discussion this morning.

Monday: WVIA Roundtable Discussion on Education Funding

Tune into WVIA on Monday at 7 p.m. – I’ll be sitting down with Katie Meyer, a reporter from Spotlight PA, and Brian Waite, the Superintendent for Shenandoah Valley School District for a discussion on education funding. I’ll be talking about my work as the chair of the Senate Education Committee and as a member of the Basic Education Funding Commission.

Bischoff Inn Wins Historic Preservation Award

Maria Stabio, the owner of the Bischoff Inn, recently visited Harrisburg for Preservation Pennsylvania’s annual PA Historic Preservation Awards. She won the Construction Award for transforming the former 1865 Conrad Bischoff Planing Mill and Furniture Factory into a five-room hotel while also preserving the history of the building. Congratulations!

Joining her was Dan Evans, the Chairman of the Tamaqua City Revitalization and Improvement Zone (CRIZ) Authority. Thanks to the efforts of Maria and funding from Tamaqua’s City Revitalization and Improvement Zone, Tamaqua now has new overnight accommodations.

Sharing Scholarship Opportunities with Local High Schools

Normally when I visit local schools, it’s to discuss my role as the chair of the Senate Education Committee. This week was very different – I visited Tamaqua Area High School, Marian Catholic High School, and Minersville Area High School to discuss the John E. Morgan Endowed Scholarship, which can provide up to $7,000 a year for students who graduated from a high school in Schuylkill County, and other generous financial aid options available at my alma mater, Lycoming College.

My hope is by sharing this opportunity, more students will have the opportunity that my brother and I enjoyed there…. I well remember how worried my parents and I were about paying those tuition bills, more than “a few” years ago. Thank you to the college’s admissions staff for inviting me to join them today, and to all the local students who joined us!

Welcome Aaron Delpais, Legislative Intern

Aaron Delpais recently started working as a legislative intern in my Harrisburg office. He’s finishing up a bachelor’s degree in political science at Lebanon Valley College and previously attended Tamaqua Area High School and Lehigh Carbon Community College.

Welcome to the team, Aaron!

LIHEAP Home Energy Assistance Applications Available

Applications are being accepted for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for the 2023-24 winter heating season.

LIHEAP helps families living on low incomes pay their heating bills in the form of a cash grant.

Households in immediate danger of being without heat can also qualify for crisis grants. The cash grant is a one-time payment sent directly to the utility company or fuel provider. Grants range from $300 to $1,000 based on household size, income and fuel type.

You can apply for the program using COMPASS, the online tool for Pennsylvanians to apply for health and human service programs and manage benefit information. My district offices also have applications available and are happy to assist with the process if you have any questions.

Turn Those Clocks Back This Weekend

Daylight saving time will end at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5 – don’t forget to turn your clocks back one hour before going to bed on Saturday night.

Biannual time changes can be a great reminder to check or change the batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms. Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms should be replaced every 10 years and located near bedrooms and on each level of the residence.
