Focus: Spring Township

On Tuesday, Representative Jim Cox (R-129th) and I, along with a few members of our staff, focused on the growth of Spring Township. We toured Alcon, one of Berks County’s major employers and Helping Harvest Fresh Food Bank which provides food in need to people from Berks and Schuylkill Counties. We saw, the job opportunities that are available in the area and how these businesses continue to grow. We finished the visit with a roundtable discussion, with township officials, on the current issues facing Spring Township. In the next few months, I am planning similar visits to many other communities in the district. If you’d like to host a similar visit in your community, please contact any of my local offices. You can read more about this visit here.

From Blight….

One of the best things about my job is helping bring projects like Miners Loft to reality. The building is a major landmark in Minersville as a former garment factory but has been vacant for many, many years. Fortunately, Bud Quandel and Craig Shields had a long term vision when they purchased it in 2016. Not only will Miners loft provide 30 new senior citizens units and provide for health care, but it will assist in eradicating blight and return the property to productive use. Congratulations to all those involved!

The Convention of States

Many constituents have asked me about Senator Kristin Philips-Hill’s legislation for the Convention of States. The purpose of this convention will be to propose amendments to the United States Constitution, limited to consideration of the following topics: imposition of fiscal restraints on the Federal Government, limitations on its power and jurisdiction, and limitations of the terms of office for Congress and Federal officials. Any amendment proposals adopted at this convention would then be sent to the states for ratification as set forth in Article V. A ¾ majority (38) of state legislatures must ratify any amendment for it to become law.

I believe it is important for Pennsylvania to join other states in seeking to hold the Federal Government accountable. You can read more about the legislation here.

Yuengling: continued growth in Pennsylvania and beyond

One of the best-known land marks in this region is the Yuengling Brewery, an integral part of the history of Pennsylvania and Schuylkill County. Events such as the 190th Yuengling Celebration bring people to our area from across the nation. Much of their success is due to the families that work at Yuengling. You can read more about their family-run business here.

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary celebrates another major milestone

In an effort to help encourage and support recovery by reducing stigma, the Independence Blue Cross Foundation has created the Someone You Know (SYK) campaign. SYK is a public health and awareness campaign aimed at reducing the stigma associated with substance use disorder not only for those who struggle with opioid or other substance use disorders but also their loved ones and families and to encourage individuals and families to seek help, treatment or other supports.

The importance of recovery: “Someone You Know”

New Grants Available for Agriculture

To assist our struggling dairy farmers, the Department of Agriculture announced the opening of the second round of the Pennsylvania Dairy Investment Program. The PA Dairy Investment Program will provide $5 million in grants for research and development, organic transition, value-added processing, and marketing grants in support of Pennsylvania’s Dairy Industry.

Beginning September 17, individuals and organizations can apply for the grants at www.esa.dced.state.pa.us/login.aspx. The application period closes on November 15, 2019.

New Argall Report: World War 2 Weekend

This month’s Argall Report Video focuses on the annual World War 2 History Weekend at the Berks County Airport.

This is one of my favorite events of the entire year. This event gives us an opportunity to step back into time and get up front and personal with equipment that was used in the deadliest conflict in human history. The WW2 veterans are the real stars of the show but with each passing year, there are fewer and fewer that come to the event and share their story. That’s why it’s so important that we learn about our history and appreciate the sacrifices the greatest generation made for us so that we can live our lives in peace and freedom.

The event attracts thousands of visitors each year. The World War 2 History weekend features special guests, over 1,200 re-enactors representing the different countries of World War 2, 200 period vehicles and 80 aircraft. The event is hosted by the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum in Reading.

You can watch the video report here.
