HARRISBURG – At the request of Senator Elder Vogel (R–Beaver/Butler/Lawrence) The Senate Majority Policy Committee will discuss the rollout of the recently passed $24 million Farm Package and the response the state has received since those bills were passed.
“Agriculture is one of the most important parts of Pennsylvania’s economy,” said committee chair Senator David G. Argall (R-Berks/Schuylkill). “Pennsylvania agriculture supports 580,000 jobs and is responsible for 18 percent of the state’s economy. With an industry as important as agriculture, we need to make sure that farmers have the tools they need for a sustainable future. We were able to pass the Farm Package earlier this year on a bi-partisan vote. Now that those bills have been passed, we want to know how these programs are being rolled out and what people have to say about them.”
The Pennsylvania Farm Bill was signed into law in July, 2018. The bills were designed to support agricultural business development, create more processing capabilities, remove regulations, establish a Rapid Response Disaster Readiness Account, and increase market opportunities.
“Our farmers are a valuable economic resource, and state government has a responsibility to provide the opportunity for every Pennsylvanian to be adequately prepared to compete in a global economy,” said Senator Vogel. “As legislators, we must continue to introduce measures that will cultivate the growth of the industry to achieve long-term sustainability.”
The Senate Majority Policy Committee will conduct the workshop on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. in the Erie Room at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg.
