Senate Majority Policy Committee will examine the future demographics of higher education

HARRISBURG – The Senate Majority Policy Committee will take a closer look at the future demographics of higher education during a public hearing on Wednesday April 10 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in Room 8 – EB of the East Wing, Capitol Complex in Harrisburg.

Committee Chairman Senator David G. Argall (R-Schuylkill/Berks) said that the hearing will include testimony provided by Nathan D. Grawe, a Professor of Economics at Carleton College. Professor Grawe specializes in demographic changes and the demand changing demographics will have on higher education.

“This will be a very important and informative discussion” Senator Argall said. “We have 338 colleges, community colleges and trade schools here in Pennsylvania. Some of these institutions are thriving and expanding while others are experiencing financial difficulties and an unpredictable future. If demographic changes significantly reduce the number of average college-aged students, then the struggling institutions must now begin to develop a game plan to ensure that their situations don’t become worse.”
