$664,500 in Funding Secured for Mary D Mine Drainage Remediation

HARRISBURG – A Schuylkill County project will receive funding through Pennsylvania's Nonpoint Source Implementation Program, according to State Senator Dave Argall (R-29) and State Representative Jerry Knowles (R-124).

More than $664,000 has been awarded to the Schuylkill Headwaters Association for the Mary D Borehole Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) Remediation Project in Schuylkill Township.

This project will reduce the amount of pollutants AMD contributes to the Schuylkill River's headwaters and reclaim abandoned mine lands.

This grant was among $3.8 million in grants, which will fund 24 projects across the state to clean up rivers, streams and watersheds.

"I commend all of the organizations involved, including the many Schuylkill Headwaters volunteers, for their commitment to repairing the damage left by unregulated mine drainage and for improving the water quality in our area," said Argall.  "This funding will make improvements for generations to come, who will enjoy fishing and recreation in streams and rivers which our parents and grandparents could have never imagined."

"It's all about making Pennsylvania a cleaner and greener state," said Knowles.  "We need to preserve and protect our natural resources like our rivers and streams by controlling, preventing and remediating non-point sources of polluted runoff.  This funding will do just that."
