Argall Hails Latest Mahanoy Downtown Improvement Project

MAHANOY CITY – Together with Upper Schuylkill and Mahanoy Downtown Inc. representatives, State Senator David G. Argall (R-29) today celebrated Mahanoy City’s recent business revitalization improvement project.

Exterior improvements at Morris Drug Store, 15 E. Centre Street, mark the eighth main street business improvement project in the Borough.  Improvements consisted of a new awning and entrance way, as well as a new sign.

"Schuylkill County is rebuilding itself one building at a time," said Sen. Argall. "These improvements will last for generations, and we’re not slowing down the pace a bit, despite a very difficult economy.  Karen Flynn, the owner, and her entire team are to be commended for their tireless work," Argall added.

"As the author of Pennsylvania’s Downtown Location Act for state offices, I understand the benefit of investing in our communities—every month, the rent that the state pays in my Mahanoy City District Office is utilized by Mahanoy City to further its downtown revitalization efforts," Argall further explained.

"Today's event marks a significant milestone in downtown investment," said John Guers, Executive Director, Upper Schuylkill Inc.  "Upper Schuylkill has reached the quarter-million dollar mark in downtown investment throughout our six communities, through funding from both the private and public sectors.  This is an example of how public-private partnerships can successfully benefit our communities," Guers added.

"I am pleased to have been part of this important program," said Karen Flynn, Owner, Morris Drug Store.  "Improving our downtown was our overall goal."

The Downtown Façade Improvement Program provides matching funds to businesses who want to improve their properties.  The improvement of over forty downtown buildings to their original style has greatly improved the appearance of the six Upper Schuylkill communities consisting of Ashland, Frackville, Girardville, Mahanoy City, Ringtown and Shenandoah.
